What Is a Dog Tag?
Dog tags refer, in an informal manner, to identification tags worn by all military personnel. The name is derived from their similarity to tags used by dog owners to identify their household pets. Dog tags are used to identify soldiers in case they're found dead or wounded. Dog tags provide medical information in addition to identification information; for example: blood type, inoculations...
Dog tags are normally made from corrosion resistant materials like stainless steel or aluminum; however, during times of war they may be made from any type of metal available. In cases of military dog tag use, if the wearer has any medical condition that would require immediate attention, another tag, red in color, is worn containing the relevant information needed by medical professionals.
Military personnel are required to wear two dog tags at all times. Dog tags are worn hanging from a two piece chain around the soldiers neck. The chain has one longer portion and one shorter portion. In the event a soldiers is found dead on the field of battle the longer chain is collected for notification purposes while the shorter chain with the second tag is left on the body for future identification. The shorter chain and tag are often referred to as a toe tag due the use of the shorter chain to attach the second tag to a soldier's big toe.
Today dog tag tattoos are increasing in popularity. Dog tag tattoos are often referred to as meat tags. Dog tag tattoos are normally found on the soldier's torso.
Men who have survived America's wars are especially proud to have their dog tags as a memory of their service.
